Shortfalls of Artificial Intelligence: According to WHO, COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus. Corona virus was first spotted in December 2019 at the city of Wuhan, China. WHO eventually declared it a global pandemic on 11 March 2020.
An ongoing crisis of the COVID-19 infection has flipped around the world. It has affected each part including schools and colleges, universities, health, transport, financial as well as everyday activities of peoples.
Everyone together is battling against COVID-19. It is the time of Digital Technology, so we need to quantify the impact of Digital Technologies over COVID-19.
Artificial Intelligence which is one of the developing and most appreciated fields of the present time Everyone needed to know how much impact it has made with handling the Corona Virus. But unfortunately AI cannot make a vibrant impact in tackling with Corona Virus. The present outbreak has exposed some major shortfalls of Artificial Intelligence.
Shortfalls of Artificial Intelligence
Lack of Data
Lack of Data is one shortfall of Artificial Intelligence. Data and information are the only assets that can integrate knowledge in artificial intelligence. It cannot learn and adopt the thought process like human beings. Therefore, it must prepare itself for the specific circumstance and conditions.
Whenever a new situation of crisis occurs to solve such crisis AI needs to prepare itself from the very beginning. During the training procedure we feed it with a ton of Data. Data should be significant and have a valuable pattern in them. Inaccurate data will cause inaccurate results.
As said before, AI should pre-trained itself for new situations to solve it. COVID-19 is caused by the noble virus, so not enough valuable data are available to be analyzed to find a diagnosis. Hence, Artificial Intelligence(AI) is not able to make a vibrant impact in tackling the present crisis.
The current circumstance has unquestionably uncovered the significant shortfalls of Artificial Intelligence. It cannot learn all alone, which means Artificial intelligence is just a tool. Its best uses come into play when it has good coordination with the operators. So, they should leverage the capacity of AI to adapt to the hopeless circumstance we are confronting at this moment.
Lack of Cognitive Ability
Human beings have the skill to think, read, learn, recollect, reason and focus. Unlike AI, they can think out of the box and adjust themselves with the evolving circumstance. AI lacks cognitive skills and ability which confines themselves as a tool.
This is the reason AI cannot make a vibrant impact in battling COVID-19 which is without a doubt one of the significant shortfalls of AI. On the other hand, human beings have made a quantifiable impact fighting with the Corona Virus through their cognitive ability. Although Neural network, Natural Language Processing( NLP) is leveraging its cognitive ability to think, learn, remember, reason and pay attention.
Helpful Impact of AI in fighting against Corona Virus
Though AI has not made a vibrant impact to fight against present COVID-19 outbreak but it has made a meaningful impact. A Canadian-based AI company, Bluedot that uses algorithms, machine learning, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) predicted the outbreak of the infection on 31 December 2019. The company alerted its employees about the top 20 destination places likely to be affected.
Meanwhile, Uk based BenevolentAI is using Artificial Intelligence to split down a significant amount of data to discover existing medications that can be used to cope with coronavirus until a vaccine becomes available.
AI is contributing medical researchers in their research by pooling down thousands of articles on known corona cases. One of the most prompt and significant uses of AI is in its ability to support researchers, scholastic and technologists to locate the correct data in an ocean of research paper to move to explore quicker.
US, San Francisco based startup VIR biotechnology and Atowise are using AI to discover the molecules that could serve as the basis of a treatment if the comparative emergency occurs in the future.
I firmly agree that AI is only a tool and its effectiveness of utilization relies upon the ability of the operator to use it. To make a vibrant impact of AI there should be proper coordination between operator and tool. If we can leverage the ability of AI using Machine learning, Neural Network and Natural Language Processing then we can improve coordination with its administrator then without a doubt we can handle emergencies like present Corona virus pandemic.
